Agent Skills for Engineering

Engineering skills cover the software lifecycle rather than one narrow task. They fall into six areas: requirements, which capture what the software must do and for whom in a checkable form; design, which settles the structure of a solution before and while it is built; implementation, which turns that design into working code; quality and testing, which produce evidence the software does what was asked and keeps doing it; architecture, which handles long-lived choices about structure, boundaries, and quality attributes; and maintenance and operations, which keep a live system healthy after the first version ships. Use the ranked list by finding the stage you are actually in, then pick the skill whose description matches that stage. If you are between stages, start with the earlier one; requirements and design skills shape everything downstream.

Software engineering is a lifecycle, not a single skill: understand what to build, design it, construct it, check it, then keep it running.

Triggers: 'design to code review', 'does my code match the design', 'design code parity', 'compare Penpot to my component', 'check this against Storybook', 'extract HTML/CSS from this selection', 'find design drift', 'design implementation diff'.

Also use whenever the user says "ponytail", "be lazy", "lazy mode", "simplest solution", "minimal solution", "yagni", "do less", or "shortest path", or complains about over-engineering, bloat, boilerplate, or unnecessary dependencies. Design
The structure of the solution before (and while) it is built.
Implementation
Turning the design into working code.
Quality & testing
Evidence that the software does what was asked, and keeps doing it.
Architecture

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How is this list ordered?
The list is ranked by observed search demand. Direct matches for the topic appear first, and the ranking caps how many skills any single publisher can place.
Which engineering stage should I pick a skill for?
Pick the stage you are in right now: requirements, design, implementation, quality and testing, architecture, or maintenance and operations. Software engineering is a lifecycle, so the right skill depends on where you are in it, not on which stage sounds most advanced.
Can one skill cover the whole lifecycle?
No. The topic is organized around distinct stages, and each skill addresses one of them. You will generally combine skills across stages as a project moves from understanding what to build through keeping it running.
Where do architecture and design skills fit relative to implementation?
Design settles the structure of the solution before and while it is built, and architecture covers the long-lived choices about structure, boundaries, and quality attributes. Both inform implementation, so reach for them before or alongside code rather than after.

How to install an Agent Skill

Start with the first skill on this page. Claude Code reads a SKILL.md once it is in the skills directory:

  • Claude Code — copy the SKILL.md for improve-codebase-architecture into ~/.claude/skills/improve-codebase-architecture/ for yourself, or .claude/skills/improve-codebase-architecture/ to share it with a project.
  • From the registry — run npx skills add mattpocock/skills@improve-codebase-architecture.
  • Or download improve-codebase-architecture from its source and place that SKILL.md in the directory above.

How to choose Check the source and the skill’s own instructions before you install. Official and Notable describe where a skill comes from.
