App Design Skills for AI Agents

App design skills cover the work that happens before and around code: research into who the app is for and what those people do instead, flows that map the path through screens for each important job, UI that decides how each screen looks once the flow is settled, prototypes that make something tappable before engineering commits, usability sessions where you watch people try the prototype and see where they stall, and handoff and system work that gives engineering a coherent set of parts rather than a pile of artboards. Use the ranked list by matching your current stage to the sub-topic you need, then read the skill's description to confirm it fits the screen or flow you are working on. Pick one, apply it to a real screen, and move to the next stage when the output holds up.

App design is product design for a small screen: research, flows, UI, prototype, then handoff and a system so later screens match.

    penpot-build-screen

    Official

Design production-grade screens in Penpot from a brief, as a senior visual designer — reusing the existing design system (tokens + components) and assembling section by section, never one-shot. Use to create a screen/page/landing/dashboard from a description. NOT for translating existing code (use penpot-build-from-code). Triggers: 'design a dashboard', 'create a landing page', 'design this app screen', 'build a UI from this brief', 'design a settings page', 'mock up a screen in Penpot'.

    penpot-document-handoff

    Official

Document a Penpot design for handoff by building a clean annotation layer BESIDE the design (never on top of it): a left context card (the 'How might we' goal, business rules, links, status, feedback wanted/not), numbered pin markers on the UI, matching observation/recommendation note cards on the right, and optional tooltips — all wrapped in a single hideable group so the clean design can be revealed. Reuses an annotation component kit + tokens if present; proposes and creates a minimal one if missing. NOT for auditing (use penpot-audit-*) or renaming layers (use penpot-rename-layers). Triggers: 'document this design', 'annotate this screen', 'prepare this for handoff', 'add design annotations', 'explain this flow for devs', 'add observation notes', 'create a critique card', 'spec this screen for handoff'.

Read-only on the canvas; writes one local markdown file. penpot-design-to-code-review

    Official

Review a Penpot design against its implemented code (a source component or Storybook story) and emit a structured DRIFT report. Use when an engineer needs to confirm the build matches the design: extract HTML/CSS from a selection, map its tokens/structure/states to the code component, diff them, and list what each side is missing with severity and a reconciliation. Degrades gracefully to a design-system-token check when no code source is supplied. Triggers: 'design to code review', 'does my code match the design', 'design code parity', 'compare Penpot to my component', 'check this against Storybook', 'extract HTML/CSS from this selection', 'find design drift', 'design implementation diff'.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Which app design skill should I start with?
Start with the sub-topic that matches where your work is stuck. If you have not settled who the app is for, begin with research; if the audience is clear but the path through screens is not, begin with flows.
How is the list ordered?
The list is ranked by observed search demand, with direct matches to the topic first and a cap on any single publisher so one source does not fill the page.
Do I need all six sub-topics to design an app?
The stages run research, flows, UI, prototype, usability, then handoff and system, and each depends on the one before it. You can load a skill for a single stage and still get useful output, but skipping research or flows tends to make later UI work harder to justify.
Can a prototype skill replace usability testing?
No. A prototype skill produces something tappable before engineering commits, while usability work is watching people try that prototype and seeing where they stall. They are separate stages, and the prototype is the input to the usability session.

How to install an Agent Skill

Start with the first skill on this page. Claude Code reads a SKILL.md once it is in the skills directory:

  • Claude Code — copy the SKILL.md for figma-implement-design into ~/.claude/skills/figma-implement-design/ for yourself, or .claude/skills/figma-implement-design/ to share it with a project.
  • From the registry — run npx skills add openai/skills@figma-implement-design.
  • Or download figma-implement-design from its source and place that SKILL.md in the directory above.

How to choose Check the source and the skill’s own instructions before you install. Official and Notable describe where a skill comes from.
